Everyone knows that you are not supposed to like TV. Rots your brain, panders to the lowest denominator…and when it doesn’t….*coughsFireflycoughs* it gets cancelled.

But the truth is, I like it sometimes. It’s good company, and I do other things…sew, play Sims 2, filing, etc. The commercials can be long enough that you can get plenty done.

So, what are you looking forward to? What do you enjoy? I am not going to ask for guilty pleasures, because there should be no guilty pleasures. Enjoy what you enjoy.

Well, I am looking forward to CSI, to see if Jorja Fox renewed her contract Sarah Sidle survived. I actually like Grissom/Sarah, I think it’s subtle and sweet and real. And I’d so snog Gil Grissolm.

NCIS…I’m on the wall about that. I used to love it, but now…eh. Certainly will tune in again, though. Boston Legal is also an eh.

Heroes left with a rather neat cliffhanger…so that might be fun to tune back into. I wish they’d bring back The Doctor Chris Eccleston.

For new things Moonlight looks pretty nifty…Vampires! On Prime time TV! What’s not to like? Ok, a lot. But, it looks fun, even if one wonders how much like Angel it will be. Pushing Daisies looks like fun. There’s also a time-traveling show I might try, Journeyman, and a show with Damien Lewis that will come on if nothing else is.

OMG - I totally love Gil! He's so hot, in a thinking kind of way! And I clean the bathroom, etc. during commercial breaks, so I feel you on that! It makes me feel less guilty about watching TV when my several WIPs are screaming at me from the other room.

Journeyman is sweet. But I forgot to record the last few episodes, so I might have to see if they are on the show's website.

*sighs*

So little time ...

  Avast! Argh! Me hearties!
Wednesday, September 19, 2007

I be wishin' ye a happy Talk Like a Pirate Day. For meself, me only regret is that I be forgettin' me frockcoat this mornin when I rose from me berth, but to be truthful to ye, a rare thing in me feild, I overslept a we bit and was thinkin I better haul meself to work.

And I be stoppin this now, just want to warn ye not to be a lubber and talk like a pirate!

Of course, I am not exactly able to talk like a pirate much...I don't think I can answer the phone, "Avast! Ye be callin' the Department of History and Political Science, tell me what you want, or walk the plank!"

No. That won't fly.

Two things have preoccupied my time of late, The Templars event here on campus (Did I tell you there will be men doing sword fighting? And Friesian Horses? And if I can arrange it with campus catering, Medieval style food? Oh, and talks on Chivalry, religious military orders, The Templars, and their Myths. My guy is a bit Anti-Dan Brown, so part of it will be de-bunking the idea that there are secret sects of the Templars hiding out doing Things of Questionable Virtue. He has said that many, many really good scholars have gone looking for even the slightest shred of evidence that the Templars survived what happened to them, and have found none. Of course, I could say, “Of course not, silly, *secret* sect, hello!” But the fact is, I tend to believe he’s right.

The second? Preparing for Blue Moon to come out Next Month. I’m trying to line up interviews and book reviews, but it’s not easy. I prepared lovely post cards, but Vista Print (even though I uploaded them once and VP said they were fine and met all the specs) refuses to load them for me now. I’ll have to try again tonight. I need the post cards to send off with my press packet to libraries and book stores.

Le and sigh. I wanted to do this sooner…by now I’m tempted to wait for the book to actually be out.

At least I can do some combining of work, I can push Blue Moon and the short stories together.

Ooh…shiny… The Real Master and Commander This book is going directly to the Half.com list…

I can highly recommend a book he worked on, if not completely wrote: A General History of The Robberies and Murders of the Most Notorious Pirates….that’s a really cool book. But oh! Look at these…there look really awesome: Heroines and Harlots Which is about women dressing up as men to go to sea, and Seafaring Women: Adventures of Pirate Queens, Female Stowaways, and Sailors' Wives

Thirteen Things about YOUR NAME

Thursday Thirteen

Some of my key phrases.

There are a handful of things I often say…sometimes phrases can be crutches, sometimes they are odd ways to define who you are. Here are some of mine.

1. Sipping chocolate: Ever have a piece of chocolate that was so rich, so satisfying, that you didn’t need to eat more? That’s sipping chocolate, inspired by the old idea of sipping whiskey.
2. No worries: I’ve said this ever since I was a kid, when I had my fascination with Australia…I think in the 7th grade. Even the Lion King couldn’t stop me from saying it…though I did go through a time when I would have gladly strangled anyone who said…what was that word? Ah, thank you, Google: Hukuna Matata. Anyway, it’s one of the things I say 500 times a day.
3. Take care: this is my other main phrase. I say it instead of good-bye. Sometimes I say it when I’m just leaving someone’s office and plan to see them in a minute or two…which is very embarrassing. Take care in Cindy-speech is “Fare well, stay safe, see you soon, I am leaving you now.”
4. Awesome/nifty: I tried to get away from Cool, which I also use far too much. Too many people made fun of me, partially because I say it, I guess, oddly? I say the C hard, like a K, and oool like pool. Sounds normal in the typing, but hey, what do I know?
5. Snarky: Isn’t Snarky a great word? It’s fun, it’s perfectly descriptive.
6. F***: That is my favorite curse word. I think saying GD is blasphemous, but the f-bomb is perfectly fine. There’s a satisfaction to uttering the word, it’s short, quick, and almost like a foot stamp.
7. Dear: One of my bad habits. This word covers two issues: If I like you, or find you endearing, I call you dear. Also, even though I like you, speak to you once a day, I may be too busy doing what I need to do to bring your name from my knowledge to my tongue. So dear is both a compliment from me, and a crutch.
8. Lord willing and the creek don’t rise: I have no idea why I say this. I think I say it because I want to make Lord willing into a phrase, that way it becomes acceptable. I’m still saying God willing, but now I’ve made it palatable, or at least slightly more so, to all. I really need to stop being an apologist before I die.
9. Drat!: If I’m trying very hard not to curse. Fung’s another one. If I can’t be dirty, at least I can be original.
10. Gormless git: (Or, sometimes, gormless twit.) If I’m really annoyed…usually reserved for those fake telemarketers that call work all the time. I get so sick of picking up the phone, only to find that I dropped what I was doing for nothing.
11. Sweets/babe: How I address my mother. People think I have a girlfriend, because when I say hello or bye, it’s usually, “Hey babes!” or “See you, sweets!” My father also gets addressed this way if I am in a good mood with him. I’m sure someone could make a very interesting profile on me based on that.
12. Shall: I actually use this word a lot, especially in speech. I think it’s a nice word, and it shows people that you are serious.
13. Thank you: This is the most important phrase anyone can say. And when you say it, you should always look them in the eye. If you can’t, “so much” is also good. I think people always should know that you are grateful. In friendship, it keeps people from feeling abused, in business; it makes people more willing to help.

I loved reading this! After I read it I thought about it and realized I have a lot of phrases I say daily that have been with me for a long time.

I've heard a good portion of the ones you use (and yes, snarky is a great word lol) but I love the sipping chocolate one. I know exactly what you mean!

Thirteen Things about Places I want to Visit

1. The Highlands of Scotland. It’s part of my heritage, and I find everything about it so appealing…I’ve always been big on windswept crags. I would like to do a walking tour of sorts, you know, the kind where you just walk across fields for days? I think that would be lovely, and I think it would be wonderful to do it by myself, in some ways, so I can just walk and think and feel.
2. The Rhine. There’s this romantic tour of the Rhine that takes you down the river in a boat. I love the idea of floating along, looking up at all these robber baron castles. And anything with water is a huge plus for me.
3. Portsmouth, Plymouth and Bath, in England: These are places that I grouped together because for me, touring these places would be major age of sail squee, with a bit of Jane Austin thrown in. Sometimes people have Regency themed parties where you actually dress…wouldn’t that be lovely? I think the idea of living a few hours of Regency life in bath would probably be one of the most interesting experiences. But mostly? I want to see the ships.
4. Camlaud, Salisbury Plain, Glastonbury Tor… I am, and always will be, a confirmed Arthurianist. So, of course, I’ll want to take a peek at all the sites I can, especially any outlined in Geoffrey Ashe’s historical archeology of King Arthur books.
5. The Four Corners, Arizona. Ever since I read Tony Hillerman’s Leaphorn and Chee mysteries, I loved how the place sounds. And I’ve always been fascinated by the rock formations and vistas. I think it would be beautiful.
6. China. I’m not actually certain where. I would like to see countryside as well as city, though. Something not too touristy…it just seems so beautiful.
7. Australia. When I was 15, 16, I had a tour all mapped out. I’d visit Queensland and Sydney and Alice Springs. I’d climb Ayers rock, I’d see the Opera house at sunset.
8. Germany. Outside of having friends there, I just think it looks really interesting. I want to…I am fascinated with old architecture, and what I know of the culture seems different from what I know, but not so much so. I’m not saying I’m trying to stay within a comfort zone of what I know, but I am interested in seeing the subtle differences. I think those will teach me a great deal about humanity.
9. Spain, but most especially Andorra and Valencia. From the outside, Spain seems to combine passion and tradition and history – a very interesting history at that. Also, I’ve always wanted to visit Biar castle, and perhaps some of the lovely buildings left from the time of Muslim rule.
10. New Zealand. I’ve been told by many people that New Zealand is one of the most beautiful places in the world, and one of the most fantastical (a friend told me in college, if Elves still existed, they live in New Zealand) and so I wanted to see it even before Lord of the Rings convinced me that everyone was right.
11. The Klondike, especially the Sentinel Island Lighthouse. Any tour of the world must include light houses, and I think the Klondike is wonderful…I also want to experience midnight sun…I think it would be interesting to see what it was like, to never have night for a few days.
12. Ireland. I’m not sure where, because I want to see it all, much like Scotland. I want to look for fairy rings, but mostly, I want to wander the coast and dream.
13. Canada: When I think of Canada, I think of natural beauty – I would like to do some serious walking in Canada.

Wow, I can think of a lot of other places I would like to visit. I better hurry up and become famous!

Oh, yes, I'd love to go to these places too! The only place I've been is Germany, but not to the Rhine itself. (That Man was stationed overseas and I visited him one summer in between college semesters.) Happy TT!

Yu've chosen some lovely places. I've been to some of them, and of the others, Australia is the most attractive to me right now.

Nope, no writing yesterday after all, I worked on the Templar event that’s coming to campus. It is a ton of work, but it promises to be amazing.

I did read a bit of Water’s Edge last night, editing while I did so. I started writing it three years ago, now, wanting to create something epic and beautiful and very deeply magic. At that point I’d not completed a fully other world fantasy book, both Blue Moon and Balancing Act take plac in the present. It’s hard to get a grasp of something that has lain still for so long. I’ve worked on it off and on, but I keep getting stopped. I know what basically should happen, and I have an idea where to go next, but between trying to combine this story with another (I want there two eventually be two books that belong together telling a wider story…I keep wondering if I should stagger the two plots together, through the two books, or make each plot its own book) and trying to make the beginning more exciting (there’s a lot of important stuff that happens in the first 100 pages, but I can see impatient readers going, “but when do we get to the Mer-people? When does something *happen*?) I keep running into walls.

It’s going to be a great story, filled with sea witches and mer-people, sailing ships and vast under sea worlds. There’s espionage and love. So I wish my head would get into it again.

Of late, I write my journal entries in pieces. I bring up the file, start, decide there’s something that needs done right now, go away and do it, then add to it. Which explains, probably, why there is sometimes a lack of consistency.

This was the summer of the baby, for sure. I’ve gotten pictures of all of them now…including the latest. My Department chair’s wife had their little girl the day before yesterday.

I’m getting back to the idea that true, perfect morality is impossible. If I were truly moral, I would not eat, drink, wear anything that could be connected to any type of harm. I would be completely without self desire. That is absolutely not possible. Everything in this world is tainted, somehow. Sugar, soda, the material that makes my shoes. It is very frustrating. I suppose one must live with it, then try to make up for it by changing the way things are for the better.

I am also getting a parasol for my birthday, I decided. I saw one that I really loved, and am going to ask my mum for it. Yes, parasols are really rather useless. But I’ve always really wanted one. And I’m controlling myself…ecru, not black or purple or some other shiny color.

Also, I’m almost done with the ultimate wench costume. I made some minor mistakes creative adjustments, and now only need to hem the skirts.

OMG, Thursday! I need to do my 13!

It’s just…yeah.

I’m so worried and upset about so many things, but I don’t want to be all whiney all the time on my journal, so I’ll skip it.

Part of it is that it’s not easy being truly moral and good. When I mean moral, I don’t mean the obvious things, don’t sleep with a married man or lie. I mean real morality, real spiritual goodness. It’s not meant to be easy, but sometimes I wish I could be selfless in complete, that I would not want things so powerfully. It would make decisions so much easier. And it would make me hate so much less those who should not be hated. Well, maybe hate is too strong a word. Resentment is better.

The thing is, I am also trying to avoid having regrets, because I have a hard time letting things go. I tend to let them fester and feel badly about them.

The well pump was fixed Monday…which was wonderful. I am so grateful for that, being able to shower was heaven. It also kept me from risking a Withnail and I-esq moment, because down in the valley that my house overlooks is a creek. And that creek is fenced and gated off, because there’s cows. I’d been contemplating going down to the creek to get water (despite the gate and electric fence) enjoying the idea of exploring old grounds again. I wish that it wasn’t fenced off…before it was, I would spend a lot of time walking down the creek, until I got to the highway over pass. I used to stand under the highway, water trickling around my feet, listening to the cars zooming overhead. It felt like a completely different world, and the contract between it, and between the very old stone bridge that I would have to cross under to go home made the gap seem even bigger.

I started this journal post three hours ago and still feel crocky. I wish I’d brought a book – I’m reading Plum Lovin’ with its lurid purple-pink cover and decided I didn’t feel like carrying it with me to work and having anyone look at me oddly.

Aha. I know what I will do. I have exactly one dollar. I will go to the local library, use said dollar to buy a book (or three…it’s three paperbacks for a dollar) and then I will go to quiznos. Yes. That should cheer me. I need cheering. I’m catching up at work, and if I have a proper mindset, I will be able to – dare I say it? Write.

  Of wells and iris beds
Saturday, September 01, 2007

*falls over and is dead*

Not a bad day, just tired. I'm actually in a pretty good mood.

Colin and another guy came over and worked on the roof. Man, they got SO much done…he’s so awesome. Now to pray it doesn’t rain, because it’s not tarped. >_<
It’s working out really well. He’s aware of my problems in *some* quarters, and he and I are good, thank God for that.

But, while I was out digging up my Iris bed to separate the rhizomes and replant, as well as plant some more (I have one called Night Owl…it’s black. Oooh. And Queen of Fire! And Rainbow Catcher. And some of them are re-blooming, which would mean Irises twice a year, if they take!) my mum came out and told me that we didn’t have any water. She’d been doing the first load of laundry, and the well pump just kept turning off. This is great, right? Because it’s not just the weekend, it’s Labor Day weekend. So we had a hard time finding anyone who would come out. The guy who put in the well did, though, despite the fact he’s retired, and analyzed the situation…and we need a new pump. So his replacement is coming Tuesday. No water till then, though if we fiddle with things, we’ll get enough to flush the toilets, using a bucket.

So, guess who’s sneaking down to the school gym to bathe? >_<

Anyway! I ran down to town with the laundry and re-washed it because the clothes, even though they’d reached the rinse cycle, where covered in some sort of grit. And I’m drinking a milkshake from the Dairy Queen (Blueberry…never had once before, it’s nice!) next door, so really, it wasn’t a bad trip. I bought some gallons of spring water, because the spring I was hoping to pinch some water from is all damaged and not flowing well, and I figure we’ll survive. I’m not thrilled with the expense of the pump, coming now when I’m paying people to fix the house, but such is life.

When I got back home, I replanted my Irises at last. The bed looks pretty nice, I think, and I’m really, really hoping that every single one will take. I want to see those glorious colors in real life! It’s amazing, I started with 7 plants. Four of them died right off, so I moved the rest, and now I have almost twenty. Before I planted these new ones I had a rust-red, a yellow and a blue (which didn’t bloom this year, so I moved it to the bed. It was next to the house.) so it’ll be fun to have some more colors.

Am I blathering? I think I am. I’ll go finish sewing my blouse, perhaps…the Ren-Faire is now going on, and I am trying to convince mum, whose getting to go (Yay! Is it pathetic my mum is one of my very best friends?) that she wants to wear one of my costumes.

Also: Go here and download free eBooks! They are sponsored by companies, so the authors get .50 cents a download. Inverloch, that fabulous comic I told you about, is there, as is a neat book on pirates, a interesting book on culinary words, and tons of classics. I see now it even has “Penny and Aggie”, which I loved, but got lost on…somehow I didn’t start reading in the right place, and got mixed up. If you are a college student, this might save you some change.
